1 - OpenAI updates ChatGPT and launches a “charm offensive”, with the race with Google Gemini still open
OpenAI ships GPT-5.2 to defend ChatGPT’s “knowledge worker” turf. GPT-5.2 is positioned as OpenAI’s most advanced model for professional work (better at spreadsheets, presentations, coding, and long-context tasks) amid mounting pressure from Google’s Gemini and Anthropic in both benchmarks and enterprise adoption.
Altman signals “code red” may end soon after GPT-5.2. Altman expects OpenAI to exit its internal “code red” by January, arguing Gemini 3 hurt metrics less than feared. GPT-5.2 rolls out in multiple modes (Instant/Thinking/Pro) aimed at everyday professional use.
Is OpenAI having a strategic reset (prioritizing mass adoption over moonshots)?. A WSJ deep dive earlier in the week framed “code red” as a course correction, deprioritizing side projects (including Sora) and leaning harder into ChatGPT growth and product polish to fend off Google’s momentum, even amid internal tension between consumer scale and AGI ambition.
Why the urgency: OpenAI can’t look like “just another chatbot.” An article at the Atlantic argues OpenAI is falling behind across multiple dimensions as Gemini 3 surges and rivals gain ground in coding and integration. It portrays OpenAI’s expanding “ecosystem” features as a commercial land-grab that risks distracting from the core model race.
Meanwhile, Altman’s “charm offensive” goes mainstream. Silicon Valley is currently in a PR push to soften public backlash. And, within that, Altman’s recent Tonight Show appearance (talking parenting + ChatGPT) could be interpreted as a carefully timed attempt to sell AI as helpful and human amid intensifying regulation and skepticism.
Disney’s $1bn deal could help regain momentum: a copyright truce and a potential boost for Sora?. Disney announced this week that they will invest $1bn and license ~200 characters for use in ChatGPT and Sora, giving OpenAI a path around costly copyright fights. However it is still unclear if this could help fix Sora’s bigger problems: weak daily engagement and punishing compute economics.
2 - At the same time, Google is not slowing down
Google’s perceived leadership with Gemini 3 has triggered claims for regulators to review its “unfair” AI data edge. This week Parmy Olson argued Google’s biggest advantage isn’t model quality but privileged access to the web via Googlebot, which can feed Gemini and AI Overviews with high-quality data while publishers lose traffic and leverage. Regulators might push for a separate “AI crawler” with opt-outs/compensation.
Ads are now coming to Gemini, and this could increase the regulatory pressure. Google has reportedly told major advertisers it plans to introduce ad placements inside Gemini in 2026 (separate from ads in AI Mode search). Details are still vague, but tying Gemini to Google’s core ad machine could intensify scrutiny over self-preferencing and market power. So in AI, as in many other fields before, there is a trade-off for Google between exploiting their strengths and staying away from regulators’ actions.
Google is also working on what could be the “next AI breakthrough”: models that keep learning after launch. Google, as other top AI labs, increasingly points to “continual learning” as the next breakthrough: systems that learn continuously rather than via periodic retraining. The technical hurdle is avoiding “catastrophic forgetting,” beyond today’s RAG-style workarounds (which let the models get “fresh” information from external sources in each query, without actually “learning it” by updating the neural network weights)
3 - Meanwhile… Can China win the “Tech Cold War” (with a different strategy)?
China may “lose the AI race” yet win the broader tech war. The US seems to be going all-in on expensive frontier AI, while China is hedging across EVs, batteries, robotics, solar, wind and grid build-out. So, if AI returns disappoint, America’s single-bet strategy could backfire.
Indeed, China’s abundant, cheap electricity might give them a quiet AI advantage: . China’s world-leading grid and rapid power expansion are making AI compute cheaper, with some data centers already paying a fraction of US rates. That power cushion could help China scale clusters of less-advanced chips and narrow their “electron gap”, as US grids tighten.
On the software-side, open-source is China’s “Android strategy” for AI. Chinese expert Kai-Fu Lee argues Chinese labs (DeepSeek, Qwen and others) are normalizing open-source, letting developers fine-tune, run models on-premises and iterate quickly via community forks. The bet is breadth and adoption, while the US pursues premium, closed “iOS-like” models.
4 - The disappointing stock market reactions to Oracle’s and Broadcom’s results create more “AI bubble” concerns
Oracle has been penalized for doubling down on AI CapEx. Oracle’s shares fell sharply after it lifted planned data-centre spending by $15bn (to ~$50bn) while revenue missed expectations. Markets are worried about huge up-front cash burn and rising leverage, with profits pushed further into the future.
Investors doubt the “divination” behind the spend, because OpenAI is the anchor. FT’s Lex argues Oracle is effectively a leveraged bet on OpenAI’s long-term promises: CapEx is surging, but near-term revenue guidance didn’t. If OpenAI demand or momentum wobbles, Oracle’s debt-funded build looks riskier.
Indeed, the perception on OpenAI is changing: from “market savior” to an anchor on sentiment. Bloomberg describes a rapid rotation: OpenAI-linked trades (Oracle, CoreWeave, AMD, etc.) are now being sold as doubts grow about profitability and financing complexity, while Alphabet-linked names benefit from a “deep-pocketed” narrative.
Broadcom’s sell-off shows the same nerves: AI exposure cuts both ways. Broadcom’s stock price dropped despite strong quarterly numbers because guidance implied weaker margins from a higher mix of AI revenue, including investor concern that large AI orders (e.g., from Anthropic) could be less profitable than hoped.
Fermi’s plunge: the AI power/data-centre boom looks fragile. The value of the newly listed data-centre property group Fermi nearly halved after its first tenant pulled $150m of pledged construction funding. The episode underscores how quickly “AI factories” stories can unwind when commitments soften.
Is it a bubble? The right question might be “who gets the profits?” An investor at the FT argues bubbles form when enthusiasm turns irrational; AI may be transformative, but the ultimate source of profits, and which companies capture them, remains unclear, especially as the arms race shifts toward debt-financed spending.
Even accounting debates are getting pulled into the narrative. Scrutiny is growing about how fast AI chips should depreciate: companies are trying to extend GPU’s useful life as a way to improve near-term profits, but the increasing mismatch with actual expected useful lives could also be understood as a symptom of a financial bubble
5 - Increasing rumors about a SpaceX IPO in 2026 (and OpenAI, Anthropic could imitate)
SpaceX has apparently told employees it’s getting ready for a possible 2026 IPO. CFO Bret Johnsen would have told staff the company is preparing for a potential listing next year (albeit timing is “highly uncertain”), and disclosed a new internal share price implying roughly an $800bn valuation, including Starship, Mars ambitions, and even orbital AI data centers.
On the bullish side, ARK Invest turns belief into a number: ~$2.5trn of enterprise value in 2030. ARK Invest has open-sourced its SpaceX model, released in Jun 2025, which produces an expected 2030 enterprise value for SpaceX around $2.5tn, with a ~$1.7tn bear and ~$3.1tn bull case. The core flywheel is Starlink cashflows funding rockets, satellite capacity, and eventually Mars investment—highly assumption-driven, but powerful for “true believers.”
Supporting the bullish view: “data centers in space.” SpaceX and Blue Origin are pitching orbital AI data centers as a way around Earth’s power constraints: SpaceX via upgraded Starlink satellites, Blue Origin via a dedicated internal effort. Advocates point to solar power; skeptics flag huge engineering and cost hurdles, with tests (e.g., Google/Planet Labs) still years out.
In an X chat with ARK, Elon Musk did suggest that “data centers in space” could massively increase SpaceX’s valuation: He thinks the cheapest way to scale AI soon won’t be building more data centers on Earth: it’ll be putting AI computers on satellites that run on constant sunlight in orbit. Those satellites would send results back to Earth through laser links to Starlink.
2026 could be a mega-IPO year: SpaceX plus OpenAI and Anthropic. These three companies could create an “IPO boom for the ages,” driven by extraordinary capital needs and headline valuations. But they’d also stress-test public markets with unprecedented losses, uncertain business-model durability, and governance questions where mission may conflict with shareholder interests.
6 - Trump authorizes sales of more powerful Nvidia AI chips to China, but it is not at all clear what will be the impact
Trump green lights Nvidia H200 sales to “approved” China customers—plus a mysterious 25% cut. The US President said Nvidia can ship H200s to vetted buyers in China under “national security” conditions, claiming the US will receive 25% (the mechanism for this is unclear). Lawmakers and security officials warned this could accelerate China’s AI and military capabilities.
This has been initially seen as a policy U-turn that could materially boost China’s AI trajectory. The move has been framed as a potential “game changer”: H200s are older than Blackwell but still far ahead of most domestic Chinese chips. A WSJ article this week points to persistent demand (and smuggling efforts) as evidence China that will grab any compute it can get.
A WSJ Editorial wonders why hand an adversary advanced compute, and what is the US actually getting back. They argue that America’s AI edge relies on compute, and selling H200s risks shrinking that advantage while setting a troubling precedent (national security traded for “25% payments”). They also question whether China could later force a switch to domestic chips anyway.
Capitol Hill is pushing back on the rationale, and on Nvidia’s “Huawei is catching up” argument. The US Congress China committee chair J Moolenaar has asked what analysis justified the decision, disputing claims Huawei’s chips truly match Nvidia’s. He warns China can “scale out” many weaker chips, and that H200 exports could undercut the US strategic lead.
Amid all this noise, China is signaling it may prefer local chips regardless. Beijing has actually added Huawei/Cambricon AI chips to an official procurement list for the first time, part of a broader “Xinchuang” push to phase out foreign tech. However some companies using the chips are complaining about the risk that domestic chips sit idle due to portability issues (from systems running on Nvidia to the new local processors).
7 - On other threats to Nvidia, Google could be on the way to close the gap, while new efficient-compute solutions could accelerate disruption in the GPU market
Broadcom confirms Anthropic is their $10bn “mystery” customer, buying Google TPUs. Broadcom CEO H Tan said Anthropic had ordered $10bn of Google’s Ironwood TPU racks (plus an additional $11bn order), with Broadcom delivering full server racks. It’s a loud validation that major AI labs are diversifying away from Nvidia GPUs.
Google’s TPUs are moving from internal advantage to external Nvidia threat. Gemini 3’s strong performance has put Google’s TPU strategy in the spotlight, with plans to scale production sharply and offer TPUs more widely. Analysts even claim that Google’s improved tooling (including AI coding) could weaken Nvidia’s CUDA lock-in for customers.
Startups target AI’s biggest pain point: wasted electricity between the grid and the GPU. PowerLattice claims chiplet voltage regulators placed inside the GPU package can cut chip’s power consumption. This innovative solution would generate “50% savings”. The claim is currently under debate, but the direction is clear: power-delivery innovation could be a way to disrupt the current GPU market (and its leader, Nvidia).
8 - Eliminating barriers for enterprise AI adoption is also a key priority for OpenAI, but it’s not an easy task
OpenAI is prioritizing advocacy vs. analysis, as targets for its economic research team. An OpenAI economist (T. Cunningham) has quit after arguing the group faced pressure to publish more upbeat findings and avoid work emphasizing downsides like potential job substitution. OpenAI says the team’s scope has expanded and remains rigorous.
An example of the output they would be looking for: GenAI might save ~40–60 minutes per worker per day. In a recent OpenAI survey of ~9,000 workers across 100 companies, roughly three-quarters said AI improved their tasks’ speed or quality. The report also touts >1m paying businesses and ~7m paid ChatGPT enterprise seats.
CEOs look convinced about AI’s returns, but they also expect labor-market pain. The WSJ cites a Stagwell survey of 100 CEOs at large US companies: 85% think AI is in a “healthy growth phase” (not a bubble) and 95% call it transformative. However, many still expect AI to weaken the job market.
Adoption also hits a “human wall”: people don’t trust black-box decisions when they come from AIs. Christopher Mima (WSJ) argues people tolerate opaque human judgment but hesitate with AI—even when it may be more accurate. One solution is “show your work” AI: auditable, explainable systems (common in insurance) that can be monitored and challenged like a process, not an oracle.
9 - Can longevity technologies and progress in AI drug discovery drive an expansion of our healthy lifespans?
Longevity is going mainstream, even if it risks turning into a “wild west” of pricey, uneven care. FT’s Tech Tonic podcast has visited longevity clinics offering exhaustive screening and experimental regenerative treatments (stem cells, gene therapies), alongside self-experimenters operating offshore. The big questions: safety, regulation, and whether longer “healthspan” becomes a luxury good.
Meanwhile AI drug discovery has already shown promise against antibiotic-resistant bacteria (but funding is a bottleneck). Researchers have used machine learning to design candidate antibiotics that worked in lab tests against superbugs like MRSA and gonorrhoea. The challenge now is translating petri-dish success into animals and humans, while investors avoid low-margin antibiotics.
10 - Ford and other Western car vendors are preparing to fight against the Chinese EV invasion
Ford’s CEO claims Europe should treat China’s EV surge as an industrial emergency. J. Farley warns the EU is squeezing carmakers with ambitious EV mandates while consumer demand and charging infrastructure lag—just as cheaper, state-backed Chinese EVs flood in. He frames it as an existential fight for jobs and factories.
Unsurprisingly, Brussels’ first line of defense is more regulation: industrial-policy perks for local small cars. The EU is considering special treatment for “Made in Europe” small EVs—lighter rules plus preferential parking/charging access and more generous subsidies—aimed at making domestic entry-level models viable against low-cost Chinese imports.
Meanwhile, Ford looks for a more pragmatic solution, and is partnering with Renault to hit China-level price points. Ford will team up with Renault to build two affordable EVs for Europe on a Renault platform starting in 2028. The logic is simple: scale and cost-sharing are required if legacy brands want to compete in the budget segment.
For the long term, Ford is working reinvent the product and the factory. The NYT profiles Ford’s California “skunk works,” run like a startup, aiming to build a ~$30,000 EV pickup using simplified manufacturing and faster iteration.
